They had a brief friendship during the 2006 World Cup after they bonded over being pop stars married to footballers.

And despite the two women failing to upkeep their acquaintance in subsequent years, Cheryl Cole still has fond memories of their time together.

Speaking about their time together in her autobiography My Story, Cheryl said Victoria had hardened herself to scrutiny over her weight, insisting she was pleased with her skinny frame.

Cheryl and Victoria spent several days together hanging out in Baden Baden, Germany, where they separated themselves from the other WAGs, which includes Coleen Rooney, Elen Rivas, Toni Terry and Carly Cole.

At the time, Cheryl was engaged to Ashley Cole, while Victoria was married and had three sons with England captain David.

When Cheryl asked the ex-Spice Girl about her weight, Victoria replied: 'When they say, Im too thin, I just think: "You know what? Im happy to be thin. Im into fashion and I like being able to wear whatever I like. Its my business, and if other people dont like it, thats their business."'

Victoria also told Cheryl how she had hardened herself to the media attention surrounding her and David: 'How do I cope? I cope because I have to, because its the wa! y my life is.

'I'm hardened to it. I know how Im perceived is not how I am, and thats what matters.'

Cheryl also tells how Victoria used to hold 'her handbag up over her mouth' whenever she laughed.

Although the women were spotted dining and sitting together during the England games, their friendship appeared to philter out quite quickly after that.

In 2009, Cheryl told Vogue magazine she was disappointed that Victoria didn't reach out to her after Ashley's drunken indiscretion with a hairdresser in 2008.

She said: 'Davids mum is friends with Ashleys mum, she (Victoria) was in my hotel room the whole time during the World Cup - weve had barbecues together so I was quite shocked by that.'

The same year, Cheryl also dismissed Victoria's dress collection as being for 'old women' and 'not something (Girls Aloud) would wear'.

In an interview with The Guardian, Cheryl was quick to dismiss the range, although her bandmate Kimberley Walsh interjected, saying: 'She means older than us!'.
