Cheryl Cole looked up to her older friends when she was growing up in Newcastle, where coats tend to be left at home on fun nights out, even when it's freezing.

'We didn't have much money but they'd always have glamorous clothes and gorgeous make-up,' Cheryl, 28, recalls. 'I used to look up to them and say: "Wow, she's so pretty."

'The girls really take care of themselves in the north.

'Especially in Newcastle.

'You can tell if someone's [from] out of town - they'll have their coat on during a night out.'

Cheryl says finding out about her cash-strapped upbringing often surprises people she meets in the US.

'When I tell them, they find it difficult to believe that I'm from a council estate,' Cheryl tells Stylist.. 'They're like, "No way!"

'In my mind I'm still that person. But to them I'm a pop star, it really is the strangest feeling.'
